My interpretation for why the wall prevents the universe from collapsing is that, gods are tasked with maintaining certain fundamental domains of reality (like goodness, pain, agriculture, justice, travel, etc.), and if no god exists with a particular domain in its portfolio, then the concept that that particular domain covers won't exist in the universe.
